Ascendency: The Self in Contemporary Art explores the conceptual framework that holds space for creative permission, serving as an outlet for artistic exploration and a platform for the reclaiming of personal agency. Guest curator, Camilo Alvarez, has brought together over 100 contemporary works to be in conversation with one another to dismantle stereotypes and redefine notions of femininity within the context of historical and current social structures. By replacing recycled depictions of passive female iconography with images of active agency, these artists have given the viewer an informed perspective to consider.
Around (2025) will be on view in Operating System, an exhibition featuring works by Jeremy Flick, Paola Oxoa, Alex Puz, and Michael Scott. The exhibition will be on view at PFA Gallery in Washington D.C., at 1932 9th Street NW (enter from 9 ½ Street) from November 8th, 2025, through December 20th, 2025.
